Begin your walk at the Yonkers History Center, located in Getty Square. The Yonkers History Center is one of the most important historical societies in the state of New York. It was founded in 1952 with early incarnations dating back as early as 1877. The Yonkers Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the rich and deep history of the City of Yonkers, NY. We have an extensive archive of local history, but we are also preservers of the historic Sherwood House Museum. The Sherwood House Museum is one of the oldest buildings in Westchester County and it is a National Historic landmark. The Yonkers History Center offers tours of the Sherwood House Museum and the archives for a small fee. We also offer educational programs for children and adults about Yonkers history.
Head south on Nepperhan Avenue and take a look at the old buildings that line the street. Nepperhan Avenue is one of the oldest streets in Yonkers, and it’s home to some of the city’s most beautiful architecture. Many of the buildings on Nepperhan Avenue date back to the 19th century, and they’re a great example of Yonkers’ rich history.
United Methodist Church
Be sure to take a look at the United Methodist Church, which was built in 1868. The United Methodist Church is one of the oldest churches in Yonkers, and it’s a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture. The church is still an active congregation, and it’s open to the public for services and events.
Cross over to Warburton Avenue and admire the view of the Hudson River. Warburton Avenue is one of Yonkers’ most scenic streets, and it offers stunning views of the Hudson River. The street is also home to a number of important historical sites, including the Yonkers Train Station and the Warburton Avenue Bridge.
